Not sure I want to smell history, but...

My attention and thinking about the topic of discussion this week was immediately drawn to the foul smells and seemingly poor hygiene found in the early nineteenth century. I decided before I read the articles that I did not want to even imagine the smells during that particular period of time. However, as I read through the articles, my thought process was expanded to include hearing, seeing, touching, tasting, and yes, smelling as formidable evidence in historical inquiry.

The Marston Family Bible: 1837

In an effort to use the technology on a different angle level, I also created a synthe out of a 1837 family Bible. Containing non-canonized books of the Bible, including "Judith," this particular Bible could be used in classrooms to teach about the cannon or about the shifting nature of the book and history itself. Becoming digital-- American Patriotism: 1764-1876

For my Becoming Digital project I used a book called "American Patriotism." This version was published in 1880 and given as a gift to my great great great grandfather, Henry Marston, in 1881. The volume contains various speeches, papers and letters "Which illustrate the foundation, the development, the preservation of the United States of America."
